Angeles Delivers a Lecture at PLAI-NCR Lecture Series

Mr. Chito Angeles gives lecture on the design and implementation of the UP Index to Philippine Newspapers Online

Mr. Chito Angeles, currently the Information Technology Officer II and Head of the Computer Services Section of the University Library, U.P. Diliman and Faculty member at the UP School of Library and Information Studies (formerly UP ILIS), was the guest speaker during the PLAI-NCR Lecture Forum Series on “Design and Implementation of a Web-based Online Database of the University of the Philippines (U.P.) Index to Philippine Newspapers (IPN)” held last April 23, 2007 at The National Library, T.M. Kalaw St., Ermita, Manila. Around 150 information professionals attended the said forum.

Started in 1981, the IPN is an index to nine locally published newspapers, namely: Manila Bulletin, Philippine Daily Express, Manila Chronicle, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star, Malaya, Manila Times, and Times Journal. During the forum, Mr. Angeles talked about how the project was conceived, has progresses, up until it has become fully operational. He then gave an overall demonstration of the IPN Online’s main features.

According to him, indexers of the Filipiniana Serials of the UPD University Library indexed newspaper articles using 3×5 slips which are then arranged alphabetically by subject. He said that the initial automation of the newspaper index begun in 1991 and continued until 1995 wherein records were encoded in a CDS/ISIS database.

In 2001, Mr. Angeles attempted to develop a web-based version of the IPN using a proprietary database. Records were then converted from the CDS/ISIS to the new system. Finally, the development of the IPN Online was completed in 2006 as a requirement for the degree of Master of Library and Information Science. His thesis entitled “Design and Implementation of a Web-based Online Database of the U.P. Diliman Main Library’s Index to Philippine Newspapers (IPN)” is now the Best Theses for the Graduate Program 2007, awarded by the UP School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS).

The IPN Online is a complete automation software for newspaper management and article indexing. It includes the following major features: (1) Newspaper Management / Issue Management Article Indexing; (2) Online Public Access Catalog (search engine); (3) Online Request Interface (for reading/extended reading, photocopying, or printing); (4) Circulation Module (Lending of newspapers in print/microfilm); (5) Built-in Authority File (for subjects and author names); and, (6) Virtual Cart (book marking records).

UP Library Subscribes to Web-Feat and EBSCO A-to-Z

UP Diliman (UPD) Library offers improved access to 21 electronic databases to libraries system-wide with customized WebFeat federated search solution and EBSCO A-to-Z serial finding-tool.

EBSCO A-to-Z provides a single, comprehensive online list of titles to which the University has access to. With A-to-Z, users can quickly locate and link to journals of interest. Users can search for journals by keyword or browse an alphabetical list by title or subject.

WebFeat provides a simple, single search interface to all of the University Library’s online resources including library catalogs, subscription databases as well as free resources. Library users can enter one or two keywords and search all, some or any of the electronic databases available at once. Previously, library users can search one electronic database at a time. Access to electronic databases is available within UP campus only. Search results can be displayed according to database, relevancy-rank, author, title and date. WebFeat, an easy and efficient federated search tool, offers option to save, print and email results or hits. –MSRamos

 

e-Journal Subscriptions

The number of full text journals in digital format steadily increased. In 1999, the General Reference Section of the Main Library was servicing four CD-ROM databases, namely Academic Abstracts Full-Text, Social Science Source, Humanities Source and Readers Guide Abstracts. Said databases covered 402 serial titles. In 2005, the General Reference started servicing larger databases of full-text journals online to the autonomous campuses. First, there was Proquest Academic Research Libraries (ARL) with 1,500 full text articles and 2,500 abstracts; second, Info Host E-Psych covering 4,000 serial titles; and third, Proquest Digital Dissertations containing masters theses and doctoral dissertations from over 1,000 graduate schools and universities worldwide.

In 2005, the following are additional subscription databases available at the General Reference Section: IEEE Xplore, Litfinder on literature, Proquest Academic Research Library, Proquest Digital Dissertations, Science Direct (Business Subset), and Scopus on humanities, life, physical and social sciences. On trial is SpringerLink.

The following international databases with full-text journals also available to UP constituents can be accessed via the Philippine eLib: ACM Digital Library, ACS Journals, AIP/APS Journals, Compendex, EBSCOhost, Academic Search Premier (including Biomedical Reference Collection, Business Source Premier, Regional Business New, Computer Source, ERIC, Information Science & Technology Abstract, Military & Government Collection, Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection, Primary Search, Funk & Wagnals New World Encyclopedia, EBSCO Animals, Sociological Collection, MAS Ultra-School Edition.

On open access are the following journal databases: Aardvaknet.info, Advances in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics, AGORA (Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture), BioMed Central, D-Lib Magazine, Directory of Open Access Journals, Electronic Information for Libraries, FindArticles, FreeFulltext.com, Free Medical Journals, Google Scholar, HighWire Press, OAIster, PLoS Genetics, PLoS Pathogens, PubChem, PubMed Central, Social Science Online Periodicals, Social Science Research Network.

Electronic books that can be accessed openly are Digital Book Index, Online Books Page, Project Gutenberg, and Questia.

Never before have the UP constituents been provided with electronic resources of such depth and magnitude. The introduction of these electronic resources requires the corresponding training and orientation not only of the library staff, but more so of the library users who are to benefit the most from vast sources of knowledge.

The Filipiniana Biography database on the other hand, now includes not only biographies of Filipinos in local publications but even those appearing in foreign biographical sources. This database now contains a total of 6,877 records which is available at the Main Library.

The Gifts and Exchange of Acquisitions Section continues to solicit library materials through gifts and exchange with other establishments and institutions. During the year, a total of 1,246 titles/volumes/copies from 106 major donors were received.

Various Sugbuanon authors and collectors thru Dr. Wilhelmina Q. Ramas turned over the collection of Sugbuanon vernacular writings (Part II) to the Filipiniana Serials Section in January 2005.

On 03 June 2005, the Jose Joya collection consisting of 1,437 volumes of books (dating back to the 18^th century), serials, art brochures, personal papers, photographs, programs, and invitations and two paintings of Joya were turned over to the College of Fine Arts Library.

Other notable donations of books and writings include: Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo, Mario Cueson, Francisco Nemenzo Jr., Amando Doronila, Reynaldo Lesaca, NVM Gonzalez, Oscar and Susan Evangelista (Additional), Epifanio San Juan (Additional), the Family of the late Ambassador Ernesto Pineda through the sister, Justice Flerida Ruth Romero for rare Filipiniana, Dr. Jaime Ramirez, International States Parliament for Safety and Peace, Dr. Evelyn Toledo-Dumdum, Supreme Court of the Philippines, Embassy of Iran, Pres. Vidal Tan’s memorabilia through Rose Yabut, and rare books from the Union Church of Manila, and the annual subscription to “Filipinas, A Journal of Philippine Studies”, a publication of the Philippine Studies Group of the Association for Asian Studies, based at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, paid by Prof. Felicisima Serafica, a Filipino professor of psychology at Ohio University.

Collections donated and/or acquired by College/Unit Libraries include architectural source materials from former Dean Geronimo Manahan and Jacqueline Cancio-Vega; language area and counselor education testing materials; books and other materials on Iran, Libya, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia from the respective embassies of these countries; 516 volumes of books, magazines and journals from the Batch ’64 and Batch ’79 of UPIS; and renewal of subscription to the LC Classification Web from the family of the late Prof. Patricia B. Cariño through the U.P. Foundation in America and U.P. Foundation, Inc. –SMArlante
