TRAININGS, SEMINARS & CONFERENCES

Marian S. Ramos-Eclevia, Head Librarian of the University Library’s General Reference Section, recently presented her paper, Listen and Learn @Your Library: Development of Instructional Podcasts in the University of the Philippines Diliman University Library, at the Conference on GenNext Libraries 2012.

This international conference, held from 8-10 October 2012 at Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Brunei, is a gathering of librarians, archivists, information professionals, knowledge managers and related professionals from around the world to discuss issues that are affecting and will affect the library and information profession.  Participants’ sharing of knowledge, discussion of trends and issues, and informing each other of the developments and innovations  they are doing in their respective institutions is an ideal way of creating a database of knowledge and a synergy in the discipline that will advance and propel the library and information profession forward.

The conference theme, Emerging Technologies: New Direction for Libraries, perfectly reflects the dynamic between the advances in technologies and the library profession’s acceptance of the challenges these bring.  The conference was broken down into various sessions covering different aspects of the profession and Ms. Ramos-Eclevia chaired the session on New Trends in Reference Services.  >>> E.M. The University Library  recently held  a three-day  workshop  on Basic Digital Photography to library personnel as part of the Staff Training and Development  Program  2012 .  The workshop aimed to provide the participants to learn new technologies in the form of digital photography and digital image manipulation and their application in libraries and library work.

The photography class was conducted by Prof. Jose Alberto Tañedo for three Saturdays (September 8, 15, and 22). Prof. Tanedo is a faculty member of  the UP College of Fine Arts and at the same time a  freelance photographer. The library participants, mostly at their beginner level, were able to gain skills in the aesthetic and technical aspects of digital photography.  All of them were required to bring their own digital/SLR cameras to class.

The first session was a visual presentation on the history of photography, the camera, and digital photography.  Creative lectures on photography as an art, composition, perspective, & elements of design were presented in the second session.  Topics on the  third session tackled lighting demonstration  and  digital workflow. There was no dull moment with Sir Joey in his class as he  brought with him his expertise, humor,  and academic-class  lectures on the basics of photography.

The application of lessons were done through actual photo shoots  and assignments were given at the end of each session. Photographs taken by participants were critiqued by Sir Joey and co-participants.

There will be an exhibit of their photo works this coming November at the Main Library lobby. From the photos submitted, one from each category ( Human activity & Landscape ) will be judged as Best Shots. —- M. M. Omega
