Dr. Gary Alan Espina Ceniza and wife Dr. Joji Dungo Ceniza of No. 64 Legaspi St., Project 4, Quezon City, recently donated 4 copies of the book entitled: Thought, Necessity and Existence: Metaphysics and Epistemology for Lay Philosophers : Written in the Spirit of Parmenides of Elea written by Dr. Claro Rafols Ceniza, the donors’ father and father-in-law, respectively. Published in 2001 by De La Salle University Press, Manila, the book “identifies three postulates as basic to philosophical and … to rational thinking. The first two were first proposed by Parmenides of Elea and these can be constructed out of fragment 6 of his poem, “The Way of Truth,” which avers: That which is conceivable or speakable must be, for it is possible for it, but not for nothing, to be … The third postulate is our existential proposition: “To be is to make a difference,” which we take to replace the more subjective proposition of Berkeley, to wit: “To be is to be perceived” (From the author’s Foreword).

Dr. Claro Rafols Ceniza obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Syracuse University and LL.B degree from Silliman University in Dumaguete City. He started teaching at De La Salle University in 1977, and was its first Lucian Athanasius chairholder in philosophy. He has also taught philosophy at Silliman University, University of Santo Tomas, Philippine Christian University, and the Philippine Dominican Center for Institutional Studies at Santo Domingo in Quezon City. His published works are mostly books and papers on metaphysics, logic, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy. Among these works are: Metaphysics: a Study of the Structure of Metaphysical Inquiry (Research Center, DLSU, c1984), Elementary Logic (DLSU, 1994), and Introduction to Philosophy: Selected Readings with Introductory Instructional Texts (University of Santo Tomas, 2001).
