18 June 2008 — As the entire UP community commemorate the University’s 100th year, the UP Libraries are one with the family in keeping the UP spirit aflame!

The Library took part in all the activities thus far slated for this historical event, starting off with the Centennial kick-off celebration held last January 8th, where the Library participated in a festive motorcade/parade and cheered on as the Centennial cauldron was lit.

UP Librarians were also commissioned to function as the Research Committee by the UP Centennial Awards Committee in the recently concluded 2008 UP Parangal Sentenyal, a tribute to former UP Presidents, National Scientists and Artists from UP, last June 16th. UPD University Librarian Salvacion M. Arlante pooled a team of librarians in conducting intensive data gathering and in getting in touch with the awardees and their families. The research team was composed of: Rodolfo Y. Tarlit, Ma. Criselda D. Pabalan, Christine M. Abrigo, Eimee Rhea C. Lagrama, Marian S. Ramos, Merly R. Rodriguez, Sheryl U. Tolentino, Rizalyn Visperas and Ma. Wilma S. Azarcon.

The Library also hurrahed at UP’s centennial anniversary celebration on June 18th. Library staff joined the parade along with other UP contingents to the Oblation plaza where a special program was held. Balloons of maroon and green (UP’s official colors) were flown up in the sky at the count of 100 as one of the highlights of this momentous occasion.

In keeping with UP’s birthday, the UPD Libraries welcomed everyone to an open house the whole day of June 18th. The Library also grants “amnesty” to all library users from June 18-20. Clients with overdue books can return these materials without having to pay for overdue fines, while all unpaid fines incurred will also be written off. The last time the Library offered amnesty was in its diamond jubilee year, 11years ago. –CMAbrigo
