The citation for The Learning Commons as PAARL's Outstanding Library Program of the Year

For “providing a world-class research facility, for encouraging interaction and collaborative learning,” UP College of Engineering Library’s The Learning Commons was recognized as the Outstanding Library Program of the Year by the Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians (PAARL). A trophy of recognition was awarded to the Library in a formal ceremony held at the National Library, Ermita, Manila last  January 28, 2011.

COE Head Librarian Sharon Ma. Esposo receives the glass trophy for the Outstanding Library Program of the Year from PAARL officers and PRC Board for Librarians (BFL) Chairperson Corazon M. Nera. With Ms. Esposo was UP University Librarian Prof. Salvacion Arlante.

The Learning Commons was selected for this year’s award mainly due to it’s creative use of technology and ergonomics to create a modern learning environment for UP’s engineering community. It was acknowledged as an exemplary model of how academic libraries can create new services that support learning, teaching, and research, while at the same time responding to the changing lifestyles of faculty and students. As a library program, it illustrates how resources should be maximized to create value-added services for users.

The Outstanding Library Program of the Year Award is given to an academic or research library in recognition of its outstanding library program that contributes to Philippine academic librarianship and library development in the Philippines. The program must have a strong impact on the library community, and should be innovative, sustainable, and may be replicated in other library communities, or institutions.  – SSE
