The Rotary International formally turned-over their donation of more than 33,000 volumes of books to the University Library at a simple program at the Filipiniana Special Collections Section on 10 August 2012.  The largest donation made to the University Library so far, this donation was made possible through The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Humanitarian Grants Program, the Rotary Books for the Philippines Project,  The Rotary Club of Beaverton (Oregon, USA) and several Rotary Districts in Quezon city headed by Col. Juanito “Sonny” Ventura and the Committee Chair of the TRF Humanitarian Grants Program, Ms. Dulce Coyukiat of Rotary International (RI) District 3780.  On hand to receive the formal donation were UP President Alfredo E. Pascual and UP Diliman Chancellor Dr. Caesar A. Saloma.

Past District Governor of RI 3180 District Col. Ventura recounted how this project started in 2010 including several meetings with the RI partner Dr. Joyce Lockard in Beaverton, Oregon. The actual container with the 33,000-plus volumes of books arrived on 28 June at the University Library.  These are now being processed to be distributed to the various college and unit libraries of UP Diliman.

Also present in the program were several Rotarians from various RI Districts from Quezon City, Makati, San Pablo City and Dagupan, Pangasinan.  The UP Staff Chorale provided entertainment with a medley from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicals.
